Shoreline/Lake Forest Park WA

Shoreline, Washington is a King County community of 53,000 found along the northern city limits of Seattle. Lake Forest Park is also a King County community, situated along the northern shore of Lake Washington. Lake Forest Park has the distinction of being one of the Seattle area's first planned communities. In fact, less than four percent of the city is commercially zoned. About 13,000 people live in Lake Forest Park.

Shoreline's history dates back to 1890 when the town of Richmond Beach was founded on Puget Sound. Soon thereafter, the community was linked to Seattle by a streetcar line. Lake Forest Park was created in 1912 by well-known developer Ole Hanson. The initial concept demanded that trees only be cut down when absolutely necessary. Hanson's goal was essentially to create a scenic retreat for Seattle-area professionals. When the community was incorporated in 1961, the rest of the Shoreline School District remained in the unincorporated part of the county. It was eventually incorporated as the city of Shoreline in 1995.

Parks and Recreation

Public access to Lake Washington was improved when Lake Forest Park acquired land in 1998 for Lyon Creek Park. The 0.75-acre plot had long been the site of a modernistic private residence. To develop the park, the city removed that structure and planted 5,000 shrubs and plants that are native to the region. Horizon View Park is aptly named, for it includes the highest point in the area. The park is actually a plateau that is surrounded by steep hills. Ball fields have been upgraded, a trail has been extended and a playground has been updated since the beginning of the new century.
